I'm in the office today and have just been having a discussion about what would make our Top 10 Christmas Songs list with the Managing Director. I know, all in a hard days work but honestly the construction industry can be a bit dull so whatever it takes to liven up a day huh.
This is the kind of subject that really gets us debating - I mean, is it still okay to include Gary Glitter on our festive playlists or should we pretend that he doesn't exist? Was Chris Rea's Driving Home for Christmas ruined by a supermarket advert and is Fairytale of New York the most overplayed Christmas song ever? (Although saying that, I don't think I've heard it this year...).
Here's what I came up. I've tried to order them but you know, on any given day it could all change.
10. Santa Baby - Eartha Kitt
9. Merry Christmas Everyone - Shakin' Stevens
8 Winter Wonderland - Doris Day
7. Christmas Wrapping - The Waitresses
6. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas -
5. Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree - Mel and Kim
4. O Holy Night - Andy Williams
3. Jingle Bell Rock - Brenda Lee
2. Last Christmas - Wham
1. All I Want for Christmas is You - Mariah Carey
Sorry for being a bit predictable with my number one choice but it IS Christmas to me. I was 14 years old when this was released and it reminds me of snogging boys at the Christmas disco. I won't lie to you.
I've perhaps somewhat controversially chosen the Mel & Kim version of Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree but I could have quite easily put the Brenda Lee original too as I love it equally. I've plumped for Mel & Kim though as it reminds me of my childhood and I love the video.
I'd be interested to hear how your own choices would differ to mine so leave me a comment - or even write your own blog post, let me know and I'll check it out!
